Peanut on the AZT

The hiking Triple Crown will have to wait until 2024. This year it’s the other AT.

Peanut set off on the Arizona National Scenic Trail a little before 7:30 on Friday morning at Montezuma Pass near the Coronado National Memorial. She began her 800-mile journey by hiking 1.8 miles south to the trail’s southern terminus at the U.S.-Mexico border before retracing her steps and heading north.

Battling a lingering cold and an equipment failure, Peanut hiked 125.7 miles in her first six days on the trail, commonly referred to as the AZT, and reached her first resupply spot early Wednesday afternoon in Colossal Cave Mountain Park. She had just seven miles to the southern border of Saguaro National Park, where she planned to camp on Thursday.
